ABOUT

Matthew Torbett (he/him) is a professional costume maker and manager who works primarily in the worlds of theatre, commercial art/special appearances, and freelance commission-based design for performers and drag artists. Currently splitting his time between New York and Pittsburgh, PA, Matthew has had the pleasure recently of creating garments for Mariah Carey, ZZ Top, and various theatrical works for Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, MA including Cabaret, A Little Night Music, and Ain’t Misbehavin’ to name a few. As a manager, Matthew is thrilled and honored to be currently serving as the Costume Shop Supervisor at Barrington Stage Company. Other management/design assistant roles include Costume PA/Shopper for the Mean Girls Second National Tour and Costume Studio Manager for Carnegie Mellon University’s recent production of Constellations. His passion for making and managing propels him to aid in the creation and design of works that are daring, timely, and entertaining. Matthew earned his BA in Musical Theatre from Birmingham-Southern College in 2020 and is enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University where he just completed his second year of the MFA Costume Production program, and is currently taking a Leave of Absence to pursue full-time costume work in NYC.

Matthew is driven and motivated by his passion for vintage glamour and corsetry. This love of both the aesthetic and the creation of timeless beauty serves as a launching-off point for him to design and create daring and innovative ideas today. He finds inspiration from his divas, Dolly Parton and Cher, as well as the illustrious designer Bob Mackie. When you can't find him at any nearby sewing machine, he's probably tap dancing, playing trivia, or listing off all the musical theatre facts you never needed to know.
